Pchum Ben is a Cambodian festival where people honor their deceased relatives. Over 15 days, Cambodians visit pagodas, bringing food offerings to the monks to make merit that benefits the dead.
During this time, it's believed the gates of hell open, and the spirits of the deceased are particularly active. Food offerings are made to help liberate the spirits from purgation or to ease their suffering. In some temples, people also directly offer food to the ghosts by throwing rice balls, a practice that's seen as less traditional than offering food to the monks.
